Courtney Solberg, Columbus High School
Position: Health & Physical Education
Years Teaching: 3
Hobbies: I'm passionate about staying active and living a healthy lifestyle. I love volleyball, walking my dog, hiking, golfing, camping, and just about anything that gets me moving outdoors. I also enjoy getting creative with crafting and DIY projects. Staying active isn’t just what I teach—it’s how I live.
What do you enjoy most about teaching? What I enjoy most about teaching is the opportunity to build meaningful relationships with students and watch them grow—not just physically, but as leaders and individuals. I love creating a positive environment where students feel encouraged to try new things, develop lifelong healthy habits, and discover their strengths. Seeing their confidence grow and knowing I’ve played a small part in their journey is incredibly rewarding.
What do you find most challenging about teaching? One of the most challenging parts of teaching, especially in physical education, is overcoming students’ preconceived notions or insecurities about being active. Not every student comes in confident or excited about movement, so finding ways to engage and motivate all learners can take creativity and patience. But turning those hesitations into confidence is also one of the most rewarding parts of the job.
Best tip for new teachers: My best tip for new teachers is to be patient with yourself and stay flexible. Teaching is a learning process for both you and your students. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and learn from them. Building relationships with your students is just as important as the content you teach—those connections will help you grow as an educator and create a positive classroom environment.
Best tip for career teachers: My best tip for career teachers is to never stop learning and evolving. Education is always changing, and so are the needs of our students. Whether it's trying out new teaching strategies, attending professional development, or simply reflecting on your own practice, staying curious and open to growth will keep you energized and engaged in your work.
Favorite piece of advice for students: My favorite piece of advice for students is to embrace challenges and don’t be afraid to fail. Growth happens when you step out of your comfort zone and keep trying, even when things get tough. Mistakes are just opportunities to learn, and every small step forward is progress. Stay curious, work hard, and believe in yourself—you have the power to achieve more than you know.
What does being a Gold Star Teacher mean to you? It is an honor and extremely humbling to be named a Gold Star Teacher. This award recognizes the impact we make on our students' lives, and I believe that the work we do is guided by a higher purpose. As educators, we are entrusted with the responsibility to create a positive, supportive environment where students feel valued, encouraged, and empowered to reach their full potential. It’s a reminder that the work we do goes beyond the classroom—it shapes who our students become and prepares them for success in life. For me, being a Gold Star Teacher is about leading with purpose and passion, knowing that God has called me to this path, to serve and inspire the next generation.
